faith-based organization
The People's Shelter has been serving the city of Cape Girardeau since January 2017. At that time, a terrible winter storm was headed our way and unfortunately, a population of homeless people had begun to emerge from the crevices of our fair city. On January 9, the pastor and members of St. James held a meeting to discuss the situation, and on January 10, 2017, the doors of the church were opened. Due to COVID restrictions in 2020, we were not able to utilize our space for a warming center, however, we were able to provide hotel rooms for those needing shelter. Contact us for ways to volunteer and/or donate to any of these community services:
Community Lunchbox
The Women's Missionary Society and other community partners make lunch bags with donated non-perishable food items for the Community Lunchbox.
Showers
On Wednesdays from 4-5:30 p.m. guests can come take a shower and receive toiletries and/or gently used clothing if needed.
*weather permitting
Hotel Stay
When temperatures drop to 32 degrees or below for two or more consecutive days, we provide hotel stay for those seeking shelter during the inclement weather.
